The Art of Self-Expression: How Your Watch Tells Your Story

Are watches mere tools?

Well, at the risk of being reductive- yes, they are. But I would argue they offer more. If they didn’t, we would abandon this pursuit and make do with all the watch substitutes that offer more robust and precise tools for telling time. Smart devices can handle the timekeeping (and a LOT of other tasks) better. It’s not even close. If knowing the time is your only concern, the value of conventional watches will be lost on you.

I can assume if you are reading this blog that you probably fall into the category of watch enthusiast. On some level, you feel as I do: watches and accessories are more than just functional—they reflect our individuality. I’ll admit I strive to stand apart in an increasingly homogenized world. Social conventions and norms provide a kind of invisible fencing around our choices. If we all wear the same clothes, eat the same food, drive the same car, carry the same phone, etc. our quality of living is diminished. It’s not simply mundane- to me it feels oppressive. Why not choose a path for yourself that feels unique and authentic instead?

Choosing Watch Accessories that Tell Your Story

My first tip: To thine own self be true. Take a close look at yourself. Not just the reflection in the mirror, but inward. How do you picture your authentic self when you close your eyes and think about who you are? What defines your character? Do others also see you this way? How is this reflected in your personality and values? What words would you use to describe yourself?

Now that you have a starting point, examine your closet. What types of clothes do you already own? Do you prefer a more put together, more professional style? Is your wardrobe traditional? Modern? Eclectic? Do you favor more casual clothes? Does your line of work dictate what kinds of clothes you wear day-to-day? Answers to these questions become a lens for you to select accessories for yourself.

In the case of watches, begin with the type of watch. What is it designed for a specific task? What is the case made from? What are its dimensions? Does it have unique features? What color is the dial? Depending on the answers, you can use the colors, patterns and textures of our watch straps to blend and enhance your look. Try to stay within the same color footprint as the majority of your clothes. If you favor blues or browns, or blacks, take that into account. The shades you pick should complement both the watch itself and your skin tone. The beauty of BLS watch accessories is they are designed to be swapped to suit your mood, your style, your requirements. Apply a little color theory. Test out your ideas. See how quickly you can learn to pair accessories that convey what makes you uniquely you.
